Shea Butter Production

The ripe Shea fruits are gathered from beneath the shea trees in the Savannah between April to June. Only the fruits which have fallen to the ground are picked.

The fruits are then de-pulped by washing vigorously in water. In some areas, the fruit is buried until the flesh rots, this makes it easier to de-pulp the fruits and the heat generated prevents germination.

We the boil the nuts for about 20 minutes, dry in the sun, crack the husk and winnow to remove the chaff. The nuts are then sun dried to reduce the water content. And we are left with the beautiful brown nuts in the picture.

The nuts are manually crushed on flat stones by the women, This reduces it into smaller chunks ready for roasting

The crushed nuts are roasted over open wood fire till hot. I is ready for the next stage when you see the oil clear shining out and you can smell the unique smell of shea butter. It is then ready for milling.

The roasted nuts are taken to the mill where the men help out. It is finely milled to thick paste ready for the kneading process.

This is one of the most tedious parts of the production. The thick paste is manually kneaded in circular stroke in one direction. This kneading action makes the oil molecules in the shea nuts to break and release the precious oil. This kneading action takes place for over 45 minutes. The women take turns at this event as it is quite tiring. You will know that the dough is ready when it turns greyish white as in the picture. They then add plenty of water while continuing a gentle mixing action. The crude shea butter settles on top as in the picture

The crude shea is scooped out ready for boiling

The crude shea is boiled until the shea butter is clearly separated from the chaff which settles at the bottom

The beautiful shea butter is filtered out ready to be cooled down overnight. The chaff is used for animal feed or soap production.

The finished shea butter is sent to us here in the UK
