Our Skin - Overview by Chinwe Russell

When you look closely at the skin, it may appear to be like a very simply cover for the body. However, this is quite deceptive as the skin is much more complex than that. Our skin is the largest organ of the body, and its function is as important as the that of the brain, the heart or any major organ of the body. Our skin is the closes contact our body has to the outside world.

The skin has the important functions of keeping our insides in as well as keeping harmful foreign invaders our. Our skin also regulates the body temperature, it helps to get rid of waste matter, helps our body as a reservoir for water. In addition to that, the skin manufactures vitamin D from sunlight and is also the central reservoir for our senses of touch and pain.

Structure of the skin:

When you look at the skin with the naked eye, it appears flat and smooth, however, the skin comprises a complex network of grooves, which changes shape as the skin moves. There are 2 main layers to the skin, the epidermis and the dermis. These 2 rest on another layer of subcutaneous fat. Effective skin care can only happen when we understand how these complex layers of skin work together and how they react to the elements as well as substances that we put on it.
